This workshop introduces strategies that will enable you and your students to become more systematic in the literary analysis done before writing analytical compositions. You will learn a loose and adaptable approach that your students can reliably use (especially under time constraints) to analyze a passage — whether poetry or prose — by focusing on the speaker, situation, key sentences, shifts, and syntax.
Length: 1 day
After attending this workshop, you will be able to:
- Apply the steps of the Five-S Strategy for decoding unfamiliar passages.
- Provide a list of terms for students to use in discussing passage analysis.
- Determine areas of analysis that may cause students difficulty, and troubleshoot for methods of clarification.
- Incorporate related activities into your lessons so the Five-S procedure becomes second nature for students.
