Pre-AP: Strategies in English — The Five-S Strategy for Passage Analysis

This workshop introduces strategies that will enable you and your students to become more systematic in the literary analysis done before writing analytical compositions. You will learn a loose and adaptable approach that your students can reliably use (especially under time constraints) to analyze a passage — whether poetry or prose — by focusing on the speaker, situation, key sentences, shifts, and syntax.

Length: 1 day

Learning Outcomes

After attending this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Apply the steps of the Five-S Strategy for decoding unfamiliar passages.
  • Provide a list of terms for students to use in discussing passage analysis.
  • Determine areas of analysis that may cause students difficulty, and troubleshoot for methods of clarification.
  • Incorporate related activities into your lessons so the Five-S procedure becomes second nature for students.
