Dan Kennedy is a mathematics teacher at Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with more than 20 years of experience as a College Board consultant in AP Calculus.
Professional experience: Dan became an Advanced Placement Calculus reader in 1978, which led to an increasing level of involvement with the program as workshop consultant, table leader, and exam leader. He joined the AP Calculus Test Development Committee in 1986, and in 1990 became the first high school teacher in 35 years to chair that committee. He is a co-author of textbooks in calculus and precalculus and is working on revisions of three textbooks in the Prentice Hall high school series. Dan was named a Tandy Technology Scholar in 1992 and a Presidential Award winner in 1995. He currently serves on the Board of Governors of the Mathematical Association of America and the Executive Committee of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board. His articles on mathematics and education reform have appeared in The Mathematics Teacher, the American Mathematical Monthly, and the College Mathematics Journal.
Education: Dan received his undergraduate degree at the College of the Holy Cross in 1968, and went on to earn a masters and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Personal: Besides holding the Cartter Lupton Distinguished Professorship at Baylor School, Dan is also a dormitory parent and the "Voice of the Red Raiders" for announcing home games in basketball, football, and (occasionally) six other sports. After 35 summers working at a wilderness canoe tripping camp in Canada, he now finds himself drawn toward more restful summers traveling with friends, especially in Ireland.
