Jim Spellicy teaches AP Economics at Lowell High School in San Francisco, California.
Professional Experience: Jim began his career at the (then) small firm of Charles Schwab & Co., which kicked off a six-year career in the securities field. He moved from the options desk to error account trading, then on to trade reconciliation on the Pacific Coast floor. Ultimately he worked as the Assistant Manager of Mutual Funds for Sutro & Co.
While taking a crowded train to work one day, Jim decided it was time to fulfill a dream he first had in the sixth grade. Jim left a well-paying job and began a teacher credential program at San Francisco State University. He was hired the following fall to teach four courses and a single section of AP European History at an inner-city school. His entry into teaching economics came by way of a principal who said, "you were in the stock business; you can teach economics." With much studying and help from colleagues, Jim began teaching AP Economics.
Jim is is a former member of the AP Economics Development Committee. He has been a Reader for six years and a Table Leader for three years. His current teaching assignment is four sections of AP Economics, instructing about 145 students. Lowell High boasts one of the largest AP Economics enrollments in the nation: 270 seniors are enrolled in eight sections.
Education: Born in upstate New York, Jim began his studies in history and philosophy at the State University of New York. He completed his graduate work at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, specializing in nineteenth century Irish economic history.
Personal: A recipient of both the National Endowment for the Arts and Fulbright awards, Jim has traveled to Hungary, Poland, France, South Korea, Thailand, and Uzbekistan. In 1998, Jim was chosen as Disney Social Studies Teacher of the Year and the San Francisco High School Teacher of the Year.
