Kathleen C. Plato is the Advanced Placement Program® Supervisor with the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Professional Experience: Kathleen has worked in the Washington State Education Agency in a variety of capacities for 21 years. Her areas of expertise are education research and large-scale education program development and management. She began her career in assessment and program evaluation and supervised the evaluation of federal compensatory education programs. With a background and interest in policy studies, Kathleen worked on many of the state's education reform initiatives through the 1990s. Her experience in secondary education and strengthening high school programs led to her assignment as the lead on the state's new federally funded Advanced Placement Incentive Program starting in 2000.

Dr. Plato has served as principal investigator, project director, and adviser on many U.S. Department of Education-funded studies and projects and has written numerous articles, reports, and successful federal grant proposals. She is a former President of the Washington Education Research Association.

Education: Kathleen has a bachelor's degree in education and political science from Aquinas College. She received her master's of arts in political science, her master's of science in guidance and counseling, and her Ph.D. in policy studies in education administration from Miami University, Ohio.

Personal: Kathleen's interest in politics and education have led to school visits in the former Soviet Union, many European countries, Asia, and across the nation. She lives in Olympia, Washington, and fills an 'already full' work schedule by volunteering with young adults. She is incoming President of the Board of Directors for her local Community Youth Service, is on the regional Workforce Board Youth Council, and the Americorp Advisory Council.
