John Hnatow

John Hnatow is a veteran chemistry teacher and chairperson of the science department at Emmaus High School in the East Penn School District in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.

Professional Experience: John is an experienced Advanced Placement® Chemistry consultant, AP Chemistry Workshop leader, AP reader, and is currently serving on the Chemistry Development Committee. He is also a Dreyfus Master Teacher and has shared team leadership of the WWNFF CHEM4 Chemistry team, with whom he presented over twenty-seven weeklong TORCH institutes for chemistry teachers throughout the country. John has also presented numerous technology workshops, including TI calculator and CBL, Hypercard, Graphical Analysis, Concept Mapping, and Multimedia workshops for science teachers. He has presented numerous topics at ACS meetings, Chem Ed conferences, and demonstrated in the Flinn sponsored "An Incredible Evening of Chemistry" at a national NSTA meeting in Boston. His several notable national awards include the 1996 CMA Catalyst Award, the 1995 Tandy Technology Scholars Award, and the 1987 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching.

Personal: Although a treadmill controlled by his computer or VCR guarantees a certain degree of fitness, John enjoys reading and music. His interests include playing tenor sax in an oldies band consisting of teachers and students from Emmaus High School. John and his wife Jessie reside in Northampton, Pennsylvania, and have raised three young men: Tom, Joel, and Justin.
