Bonnie Bowen has taught for more than 35 years, at every level from kindergarten to university.
Professional experience: Bonnie began her career teaching kindergarten at the American School of Quito, Ecuador. In California public secondary schools, she taught Spanish full time for 30 years. She taught AP first in Fresno, where she founded Bullard High School's AP Spanish Language and Literature Programs, and then at Birmingham High School in the San Fernando Valley. She has taught Spanish at California State University, Fresno, and at community colleges in Southern California. Bonnie has led Saturday workshops and summer institutes for the Western Regional Office of the College Board for more than a decade and a half, and has been a Reader in AP Spanish since 1993. She currently teaches Spanish at Ventura College, where she directs her own AP Spanish Literature summer institute, the San Buenaventura APSI.
Bonnie and her husband, Dr. Wayne S. Bowen, wrote Web-page support for the individual Nextext readers that contain writings of Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel García Márquez, Federico García Lorca, Ana María Matute, and Miguel de Unamuno. Subsequently she and Wayne organized, wrote, and edited Abriendo puertas, the Nextext anthology that satisfies the requirements of the current AP Spanish Literature curriculum.
Education: After graduating from the American School of Quito, Bonnie began her university studies at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) in Quito. She completed a bachelor's degree in Latin-American studies and a master's degree in Spanish-American literature at California State University, Fresno. She has enjoyed National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships at Brigham Young University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Oregon.
Personal: Bonnie has three wonderful children, all grown, and loves traveling and working with her husband, whose support has been indispensable to her. Both of them read voraciously and are thrilled to be able to do so while living in beautiful Ventura, California, beside the Pacific Ocean.
