The AP Reading

Each June, AP teachers and college faculty members from around the world gather in the United States to evaluate and score the free-response sections of the AP Exams. AP Exam Readers are led by a Chief Reader, a college professor who has the responsibility of ensuring that students receive scores that accurately reflect college-level achievement. More than 12,000 teachers and college faculty participated in the 2014 Reading. Secondary school Readers can receive certificates awarding professional development hours and continuing education units (CEUs). In addition, Readers are provided with an honorarium of $1,639 and their travel expenses, lodging, and meals are covered.

In addition to scoring the exams, being an AP Reader gives you a chance to:
  • Exchange ideas with faculty, teachers and AP Development Committee members
  • Establish friendships within a worldwide network of faculty members
  • Become familiar with AP scoring standards, which provide valuable knowledge for scoring your own students' essays

The AP Reading strives to reach a diverse group of educators. Women and educators from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds are particularly encouraged to take part in this unique professional development opportunity.

Readers are particularly needed for the following subjects: 

Computer Science
Environmental Science
European History: DBQ and Long Essay
European History: Short Answer
Human Geography
Spanish Language & Culture
U.S. Government and Politics
U.S. History: DBQ and Long Essay
U.S. History: Short Answer
World History

Eligibility Requirements

College Readers must have taught at least one college course comparable to the AP course within the past three years. Secondary school Readers must currently teach the AP course in a face-to-face classroom setting and have at least three years of experience teaching that course. There are two exceptions to this rule:

  • If the AP course is new, teachers must demonstrate appropriate expertise and teaching experience.
  • Teachers who are teaching an online/virtual AP course may apply if they have at least three years of experience teaching the course in a face-to-face classroom setting.
