Introductory Letter: Implementing AP Italian

Dear Principal, AP Coordinator, and World Languages Department Chair:

The Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) is pleased to announce its newest course: AP Italian Language and Culture. This course represents the first new language offering to be added to the AP portfolio since the inception of the AP Program in 1955, and the first step in a commitment by the College Board to further multiculturalism and multilingualism in secondary-school education.

Also a first for the AP Program, the AP Italian Language and Culture course and exam have been designed to provide instruction in and assess not only students' language proficiency, but their cultural understandings as well, all within the framework articulated in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century.

If you plan on implementing an AP Italian Language and Culture course at your school in 2005-2006, please take the following steps immediately:
  • Visit the AP Italian Web page and register (free) to gain access to all the AP Central content.
      AP Italian Language and Culture
      Register

WHY? For those of you new to the AP Program, you will discover the many invaluable resources the program provides. For all of you who are new to AP Italian, you will gain access to the most up-to-date information about the course, exam, and related professional development opportunities.

  • Initiate the course review/approval process and add the course to your course catalog.

WHY? Your entire community will become aware that AP Italian Language and Culture will be offered in 2005-2006 and beyond, providing an additional incentive for students already studying Italian to continue their studies, and providing younger students an incentive to select Italian as their initial foreign language experience.

  • Identify a teacher now for AP Italian Language and Culture in 2005-2006.

WHY? There will be many professional development resources available to AP Italian teachers between now and fall 2005. These resources will help prepare teachers to take on the challenges of teaching AP Italian.

  • Plan to send the teacher to an AP Italian Summer Institute.

WHY? While the AP Program does not have a set of formal requirements for AP teachers, participating in an AP Summer Institute for professional development is generally one of the first steps to becoming a successful AP teacher. These Institutes offer intensive subject-specific training on the content and methods of teaching AP courses, and serve as a forum for exchanging ideas about AP. AP Italian Summer Institutes will be available in summer 2005.
We look forward to the launch of AP Italian Language and Culture and hope that you will be part of its inaugural year in 2005-2006.

Sincerely,

Thomas Matts
Director, World Languages Initiative
