|  | This unit of study is designed to introduce the novice computer science student to the concept of number bases in general and to the computer number bases (2, 8, and 16) in particular.

John Owen is a high school computer science instructor in Rockport, Texas. With a total of 26 years (1978-2005) in the teaching profession, including short stints in the Houston area as a band director and as a secondary math teacher, he has enjoyed significant success in computer science teaching, with students consistently scoring high on the AP test, as well as doing well in CS competitions. He has coached two championship teams in the prestigious American Computer Science League All-Star Competition, as well as several teams at the very competitive state level in Texas. He also is a Cisco Certified Academy Instructor, having taught at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi as well as at Rockport Fulton High School. He holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Instrumental Conducting, and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science. He is a member of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA).
