The AP Chinese Language and Culture Exam: An Internet-Based Test
|
|
| |
The AP Chinese Language and Culture Exam will be an Internet-based test. The entire exam -- including directions, exam questions and prompts, and student responses -- will be delivered and captured on computers via the Internet.
Each student will work at an individual computer, which processes everything read, heard, written, or spoken by the student. All written directions and questions will appear onscreen, and all spoken directions and questions will be delivered through individual headphones. Students' written responses will be typed in Chinese using the computer keyboard, and their spoken responses will be recorded digitally, through microphones, in the exam's software. There is no paper component; although the student may use paper to take notes during the exam, the proctor will collect the notes at the end of the exam, and they will not be graded.
Each computer will need a Microsoft Windows® 2000 or XP operating system, as well as an individual headset with an attached microphone. For detailed specifications, download the "Internet-Based Testing Hardware and Software Requirements" document, and share these requirements with your school's computer services professional to ensure your readiness for the first exam administration in May 2007.

Students have some choices for reading and writing in Chinese. The display and input options selected by the student have no effect on the student's grade.
- All Chinese text displayed on the screen is available to students in either traditional characters or simplified characters. Throughout the exam, students can toggle between the two versions if necessary.
- Students have two options for typing Chinese text. The available input methods are the Microsoft Pinyin IME (MSPY), which is based on Hanyu Pinyin, and the Microsoft New Phonetic IME, which is based on Zhuyin Fuhao (Bopomofo).
Testing computers will need to be equipped with Microsoft New Phonetic Global IME or Microsoft Pinyin input (all Windows XP computers should already have Pinyin input). It would be ideal for students to use the Chinese IME regularly throughout the school year to become familiar with typing in Chinese on computers since it will be done for the exam.
