Abenteuer im KaDeWe: A Lesson Plan for AP German Language

by Dean Guarnaschelli
Massapequa High School
Massapequa, New York

Background
This activity is designed for use in an AP German Language curriculum. Its aim is to have students use both their linguistic and their cultural knowledge to obtain and then share information. The Web site of Berlin's famous department store, das Kaufhaus des Westens, or "KaDeWe," as it is called by locals, is well suited for exercising the exact skills that potential AP test-takers need to develop. It also contains a history of the store and other interesting information.

Directions
  1. The instructor informs students about the history of the KaDeWe.
  2. Students receive the handout packet (below) and read the introduction (Einführung) in order to see a description of their goal in the KaDeWe.
  3. The shopping list (Einkaufszettel) is to be read and double-checked for understanding.
  4. Students are to read their task (Aufgabe) and start "shopping" by going to the KaDeWe Web site (kadewe.de). Note: after 30 minutes, the class will discuss answers.
  5. As soon as the location (building level and department) of all 10 gift items on the shopping list have been marked on the Einkaufszettel, the students have successfully completed their goal. Once students click on one of the "floors" at the top of the Web site, they can get a detailed map of the floor in PDF form by clicking on Etagenplan on the left side of the Web page. This allows the students to see the various departments all at once.
  6. The answers to the assignment are on the same page as the rubric.
Notes to Teachers
  • The section of the packet called Spielverlauf describes the best way to find the items on the shopping list.
  • Bewertung teachers can find a rubric for assessment purposes. National language standards are listed under Standarde.
