| | An International Conference "Panamá: The Path Less Traveled" -- the city is blanketed with this slogan promoting the country's centennial celebration of its independence from Colombia. However, during the week of October 7 to 10, 2003, hundreds of teachers and administrators traveled that path to this Central American paradise, where the Atlantic meets the Pacific. Panama City was the site of this year's annual meeting of the Tri-Association of the American Schools of Central America, Colombia-Caribbean, and Mexico. "Focusing on Children: A Brighter Future, A Better World" was the theme at the conference attended by educators from over 60 schools in the alliance. The event was held at the Hotel El Panamá in Panama City, Panama. Mary Virginia Sánchez, executive director of the Association, and Dr. Mary Mend of the International School of Pamana co-hosted the conference.
Ten teachers and one principal from El Salvador, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Panama attended a two-day workshop on AP Spanish Literature sponsored by the College Board. Pictured here are some of the participants from international schools in the region who left the workshop excited to implement the course in their respective schools. "This workshop made me fall in love even more with being a teacher of literature," commented one of the participants. The teachers spent two days working with the texts on the reading list, evaluating student work, and sharing lesson plans and best practices.
In their spare time, participants enjoyed many surrounding sites, including the Miraflores locks of the Panama Canal and the Gamboa rainforest. Another popular excursion was to "Mi pueblito." Here, visitors got to see a traditional Panamanian pueblo as well as a Kuna Indian village.
