Information from the Teacher's Guide -- AP Biology
The following information is from the Teacher's Guide -- AP Biology, published by the College Board®. More exam tips written by experienced AP Biology teachers can be found on the AP Biology Course Home Page.
Getting students ready to take the exam is an important part of any AP course; students need to be aware of the format and the quality expectations of the essay graders. Fear of not doing well is the major reason students give for avoiding the exam, but a teacher who has covered a majority of the outline and demonstrated to the students that they have successfully mastered the information and skills should be able to remove this anxiety.
AP teachers might want to use several strategies to help their students feel confident about going into the exam:
- Test students using AP-level questions, both multiple-choice and essay, throughout the course.
- Administer an entire practice exam (the 1999 and 2002 exams are released for just such purposes: they include both multiple-choice and essay scoring guides).
- Conduct review sessions prior to the exam, preferably after school or in the evenings.
- Talk about test strategies such as allotting time, when to make an educated guess in the multiple-choice section, how to carefully read the free-response questions, and more.
- Use publications and online resources available to help students prepare and review.
