An informed and original vision is present in this concentration. The work represents a solid investigation that results in growth and discovery. The subject is unique and evocative. A consistent understanding of the principles of design supports the idea of the concentration; in particular, the final four slides show a successful culmination of an idea.
Student Commentary
What was your initial idea?
My initial idea was to use broken violins and stringed instrument pieces to create abstract sculptures.
How did your idea grow and develop as you worked? You may refer to specific slides as examples.
I began with fairly simple designs. As in slides 1 through 3, my earlier pieces are manipulated only in one plane, they are fairly flat, and hang flat on a wall. As my pieces progressed, I began to explore depth (slide 4 and 5) and negative space (slide 7), rather than solely manipulating width and length. In slide 7, I began to step farther outside the existing form of the violins, leading into the pieces in slides 8 through 12, which begin to be in the round, rather than flat. In slide 9, I reintroduce the scroll, which had been absent in the previous two pieces. Also, the idea of using multiple violins together in one piece is introduced in slide 9. In the final two pieces, I continued to explore the use of pieces from multiple violins, while at the same time beginning to bring focus more and more to the scrolls, and introducing multiple scrolls into the pieces. In addition, the final two pieces become very abstract, completing the transition from very simple, less abstract designs earlier in my concentration to the more complex, and much more abstracted pieces at the end.
