Rationale
The concentration thoroughly engages the viewer with the work and the idea of representing Japanese culture. The artist shows individual thinking and risk-taking in conveying the subject matter. There is an obvious demonstration of the principles of design in the richly complex work. An excellent technique is used in the service of an evocative theme.
Student Commentary
What was your initial idea?
My initial idea was to draw the piece that gives the Japanese print look. I was fascinated by Japanese prints, and loved their designs, colors, and the unique approach to and use of shapes (the way that even the shadow was defined as a shape). Therefore, I intended to draw the Neo-Japanese-style print that would give the simple and unique look.
How did your idea grow and develop as you worked? You may refer to specific slides as examples.
As I worked on the sketches, I recognized that the drawings would look so simple, and even have that empty look if I design it like old Japanese printings. So, I decided to make it more complicated and include many layers in the design. I was very used to drawing flowers as background (slide 12) and I was afraid that the flowers would make the pieces all look similar. Therefore, I started to incorporate pictures such as Japanese castles and swords in the designs (slides 1, 4, and 6).
