Exams: 2004 Studio Art Drawing: Quality Samples

Drawing: Quality -- Section I

The student works displayed on this page are examples of actual works submitted by students in June 2004.

All of the samples here were chosen because they clearly represent different points on the scoring scale for Section I, Quality. In the course of the AP evaluation, each section of the portfolio is scored on a six-point scale. Once the evaluation is complete, the various scores assigned to each student's portfolio are combined and transformed into the final AP grade of 1-5. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is five pieces.

Each group of five works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Portfolio 1: Adriane Santa Croce, Loch Raven High School, Towson, Maryland
Score: 5

The works are generally strong and illustrate an understanding of color relationships. The cropped compositions display strong visual organizational skills and a confident student voice. The unusual viewpoints used in each of the portraits make the works different from many portraits that are submitted for the course. The work displays a strong understanding of the processes and materials used in each of the works.

Portfolio 2: Jessica D. Jurca, Normandy High School, Parma, Ohio
Score: 4

This portfolio received a score of four from each of the three Readers. The still lifes show evidence of working from direct observation with direction and purpose. There is some manipulation of ideas, but the compositions are not fully resolved. Although the use of value is subtle, some of the three-dimensional forms are not convincing.

Portfolio 3: Elisa Anderson, Warren Area High School, Warren, Pennsylvania
Score: 3

This portfolio received a score of three threes from the Readers. The work shows an emerging awareness of composition and process, but the technical skills needed to address some of the visual problems seem limited in areas. Overall there is a sense of effort and ambition in the works, but problems are not completely resolved.
