2-D Design: Quality -- Section I
The student works displayed on this page are reproductions of actual works submitted by students in June 2004.
All of the samples here were chosen because they clearly represent different points on the scoring scale for Section I, Quality. In the course of the AP evaluation, each section of the portfolio is scored on a six-point scale. Once the evaluation is complete, the various scores assigned to each student's portfolio are combined and transformed into the final AP grade of 1-5. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is five pieces.
Each group of five works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Portfolio 1: Sarah Cansfield
Score: 6
The works in this portfolio represent a high level of accomplishment in design. There is obvious thinking about composition, color, pattern, rhythm, and emphasis. The ideas presented are visually complex, and the solutions demonstrate confidence and imagination. Excellent technique supports effective visual design in this portfolio.
Portfolio 2: Eugenia Tai, James Logan High School, Union City, California
Score: 5
This strong portfolio effectively uses the elements and principles of design to express visual ideas imaginatively. The work is fairly confident, although not all the works are of equal consistency. The use of materials and techniques is successful. Overall the work demonstrates strong understanding of composition and color.
Portfolio 3: Shaina Pennington, Langley Fine Arts School, Fort Langley, British Columbia
Score: 4
This portfolio demonstrates a good understanding of the elements and principles of design. Taken as a whole, there is some sense of direction although not fully realized. The compositions seem purposeful and intended to convey a visual concept, although some works are stronger than others. The work shows technical competence.
Portfolio 4: Katherine Nohle, Seton High School, Cincinnati
Score: 3
The works in this portfolio demonstrate a significant challenge in their complexity. While a sincere effort has been made by the student, the problems are not successfully resolved. There is an emerging awareness of the elements and principles of design with perhaps stronger emphasis on color concerns than on spatial concerns. Overall the portfolio shows ambition with moderate success.
