Drawing: Quality -- Section I

The student works displayed on this page are examples of actual works submitted by students in June 2003.

All of the samples here were chosen because they clearly represent different points on the scoring scale for Section I, Quality. In the course of the AP evaluation, each section of the portfolio is scored on a six-point scale. Once the evaluation is complete, the various scores assigned to each student's portfolio are combined and transformed into the final AP grade of 1-5. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is five pieces. Each group of five works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Sample Work

Portfolio 1
Portfolio 2
Portfolio 3
Portfolio 4

Portfolio 1: Julia Clift, Trinity Preparatory School, Winter Park, Florida
Score: 6
These complex and purposeful works demonstrate an excellent mastery of drawing and painting skills. The surfaces are subtle, rich, and sophisticated. The works are well-resolved, confident, and evocative compositions that create a personal narrative. The works display a sensitivity in the use of value, color and subject matter. The pieces are consistently high in quality and display excellent thinking and decision-making skills on the part of the student.

Portfolio 2: Sara Stoner, The Woodlands HS, The Woodlands, Texas
Score: 5
The portfolio displays a clear sense of intention and student voice through the narrative quality of many of the works. The evocative compositions evidence interesting viewpoints and a strong understanding of the elements and principles of design as well as a strong mastery of technique. In several works the drawing is less convincing in the use of volume and scale. Overall, work is generally strong with few inconsistencies.

Portfolio 3: Sejal Vaywala, Carver Center for Arts and Technology, Towson, Maryland
Score: 4
The painterly compositions in this portfolio use a palette that is sensitive and subtle. The application of paint and compositional organization are clearly purposeful although some of the images are not fully resolved. Seen as a whole, this portfolio has some inconsistencies, however a discernable student voice is apparent, particularly in the framed interiors.

Portfolio 4: Jaime Livingston, Lindenhurst High School, Lindenhurst, New York
Score: 3
The works in this portfolio demonstrate an emerging proficiency and a sense of real effort. Inventive thinking is demonstrated in the juxtaposition of imagery. Although the use of materials shows promise, compositions are centralized. Work is more accomplished conceptually than technically.
