2-D Design: Quality -- Section I
The student works displayed on this page are reproductions of actual works submitted by students in June 2003.
All of the samples here were chosen because they clearly represent different points on the scoring scale for Section I, Quality. In the course of the AP evaluation, each section of the portfolio is scored on a six-point scale. Once the evaluation is complete, the various scores assigned to each student's portfolio are combined and transformed into the final AP grade of 1-5. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is five pieces.
Each group of five works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Portfolio 1: Eric Spore, Wyoming HS, Wyoming, Ohio
Score: 6
This photographic design portfolio elegantly translates three-dimensional architecture into two-dimensional design images that emphasize shape, value, texture, and light. Color harmonies are subtle, emphasizing complementary and analogous relationships. The figure/ground relationships are carefully studied and selected within the picture plane. Each image has an expressive quality that makes it unique; yet together the works show a consistent and unified vision.
Portfolio 2: Amanda Dorion, Barrington HS, Barrington, Illinois
Score: 5
Using a combination of soft focus, rich texture and value contrast, the works in this portfolio are confident, evocative and well composed. The elements and principles of design are used purposefully and selectively to present each subject. These works are technically strong and they express the student's ideas in an engaging manner.
Portfolio 3: Caitlin Norgard, Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, Lakeland, Florida
Score: 4
This portfolio demonstrates some degree of success at resolving design issues through a range of media including drawing, digital manipulation, and monoprint. There is some technical competence displayed in all the media used. Complementary and warm/cool color relationships are explored in the monoprints, one of which employs a very successful use of transparent layering to achieve qualities of luminosity. The portrait drawing, although appearing to be photographically derived, demonstrates an awareness of figure/ground relationship, and uses shape, composition, texture, and value effectively. Although uneven in quality, the work as a whole shows a good understanding of design elements and principles.
Portfolio 4: Timothy Ramirez, Hobbs High School, Hobbs, New Mexico
Score: 3
This portfolio has several dynamic works but is uneven in overall quality. The compositions in the photograph and the cut paper design are purposeful and deliberate, demonstrating a successful engagement with the elements and principles of design. The other works are less successful compositionally. There is an emerging understanding of color theory but several pieces are more successful conceptually than technically. Overall, the works in this portfolio are moderately successful.
