Briefly define the nature of your concentration project.
My concentration consists of images of passageways. The set of photographs captures the empty space within the passage, which leads the viewer's eyes straight through it. There are no people in the photos because I didn't want an interesting object to take away from the space. My fascination with the space comes from my love of architecture. I am going to study architecture in University and hopefully become an architect who will provide the community with enjoyable space for living in.
Briefly define the development of your concentration and the sources of your ideas. You may refer to specific pieces as examples.
My initial idea was to shoot pictures of doorways, but then I realized that passageways were much more interesting because of their depth. I started shooting in downtown Hong Kong where everything is very modern and high class (slides 2, 5, 12). Then I discovered the little alleyways next to a local market (slides 3, 6, 8, 9, 11). These photos seem to have a lot more story behind them compared to the cold and impersonal space of the city. Since Hong Kong is the land of contrast, it is not surprising that my photographs turned out to be so split down the middle. There are other pictures that are intriguing because of the geometric shapes that the composition creates (slides 1, 13, 16).
What media did you use?
I took the photographs with my Canon F-60 camera with black-and-white film. I processed the film in my high school's dark room. That is where most of the creativity occurred. I used filters, aperture, and shutter speed to make the resulting photo exactly what I wanted.
