Drawing Quality: Section I
The student works displayed on this page are examples of actual works submitted by students in June 2001. The choice of the work was shaped by several factors. As you may know, this year the Studio Art courses have been reorganized from two courses, Studio Art: General and Studio Art: Drawing, to three courses -- Studio Art: Drawing, Studio Art: 2-D Design, and Studio Art: 3-D Design. All of the samples were submitted in "General" portfolios, for which the requirement was four pieces. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is now five pieces.
Each group of four works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Portfolio 2
Portfolio 3
Portfolio 4
Portfolio 1
Score: 6
This portfolio is an excellent example of Drawing Quality Section I. It received scores of 6, 6, and 6 from the AP Readers. It conveys a sensitive investigation of the figure and an understanding of the figure's anatomy. This student is very comfortable with the use of line quality and tonal values. There is a sense of complexity about the compositions and format. Technical skill and expertise with the medium are also apparent. The compositions are developed texturally with purpose and intent. The works indicate decision making on the student's part.
Portfolio 2
Score: 5
This portfolio is a strong example of Drawing Quality Section I. This work received scores of 5, 5, and 5 from the AP Readers. The pieces in this portfolio are generally strong in technique and understanding of the materials used. The student shows a strong sense of purpose in each of the compositions. The use of color and value is successful, but there is some inconsistency in the works submitted.
Portfolio 3
Score: 4
This portfolio is a good example of Drawing Quality Section I. These submissions received scores of 4, 4, and 4 from the AP Readers. The pieces indicate some degree of success by the student. The works have some sense of purpose, but they are not as well handled or resolved as works that receive a 5 or a 6. The technical skills, forms, and compositions are not as convincing as they could be. The use of color indicates some understanding but is not completely resolved.
Portfolio 4
Score: 3
This portfolio is a moderate example of Drawing Quality Section I. These pieces received scores of 3, 3, and 3 from the AP Readers. This is a moderately successful series of works. The imagery lacks a sense of personal development by the student. Compositions are not resolved and the use of materials is not convincing. The images are central and fairly flat in appearance.
