Exams: 2001 Studio Art 2-D Design: Quality Samples

2-D Design Quality: Section I

The student works displayed on this page are examples of actual works submitted by students in June 2001. The choice of these works was shaped by several factors. As you may know, this year the Studio Art courses have been reorganized from two courses, Studio Art: General and Studio Art: Drawing, to three courses -- Studio Art: Drawing, Studio Art: 2-D Design, and Studio Art: 3-D Design. All of the samples were submitted in "General" portfolios, for which the requirement was four pieces. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is now five pieces.

Each group of four works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Sample Work

Portfolio 1
Portfolio 2
Portfolio 3
Portfolio 4

Portfolio 1
Score: 6
This portfolio is an excellent example of 2-D Design: Quality Section I. It received scores of 6, 6, and 5 from the AP Readers. The series of works is consistently high in quality. The use of color is sophisticated and developed. Values are wide ranging and the techniques are generally excellent. There is a strong sense of decision making present in these works in terms of composition. The compositions are executed with confidence.

Portfolio 2
Score: 5
This portfolio is a strong example of 2-D Design: Quality Section I. This work received scores of 5, 5, and 4 from the AP Readers. These photographs are generally strong in their use of values and tonal qualities. Each one shows evidence of purpose and confidence in terms of composition. The technique is generally strong and some of the work is quite evocative.

Portfolio 3
Score: 4
This portfolio is a good example of 2-D Design: Quality Section I. The AP Readers gave this submission scores of 4, 4, and 4. The work generally indicates some degree of success with technique and process, although the ideas and the techniques used do not always compliment each other. There is a sense of technical competency beginning to emerge.

Portfolio 4
Score: 3
This portfolio is a moderate example of 2-D Design: Quality Section I. The AP Readers gave this group of works scores of 3, 3, and 3. This group of works shows real effort on the part of the student, but the use of color and materials in each composition is limited. The works seem flat and unconvincing. There is evidence of thinking in the group of works, but the technical skills do not convey the ideas or resolve the problems.
