Exams: 2009 Studio Art 2-D Design: Quality Samples

2-D Design: Quality -- Section I

The student works displayed on this page are reproductions of actual works submitted by students in June 2009. 

All of the samples here were chosen because they clearly represent different points on the scoring scale for Section I, Quality. In the course of the AP evaluation, each section of the portfolio is scored on a six-point scale. Once the evaluation is complete, the various scores assigned to each student's portfolio are combined and transformed into the final AP grade of 1-5. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is five pieces.

Each group of works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Rationale for Score:
  • The work displays excellent application of two-dimensional design principles.
  • The work exhibits complexity and a clear understanding of the collaboration of elements and principles of design.
  • The utilization of multiple planes, featuring a variety of patterns, textures, and colors, subdivides the negative space and establishes spatial tension and rhythm.
  • The complexity of the conceptual ideas meshes beautifully with the technical aspects of the work.
  • The work is sophisticated and imaginative, and there is a remarkable sense of confidence, verve, humor, and playfulness in each piece.

Rationale for Score:
  • This work is generally strong and successful. There is evidence of artistic decision making especially in the experimentation with use of the suspended dye/ink.
  • The dominant motif (dye suspended in liquid) in four of the works implies time and motion. In three of the pieces, additional layers of textures, colors, and shapes activate the negative space and effectively unify the compositions.
  • The beauty and subtlety in the ink images that make these works particularly engaging render the self-conscious addition of identifiable imagery unnecessary.
  • The graphite rendering is particularly evocative. The repetition of shapes helps establish visual rhythm. Value contrasts (light and shadow) provide unity in composition and activate the negative space.

Rationale for Score:
  • These works display a conscious and purposeful use of the elements and principles of design.
  • Some pieces evidence risk taking and experimentation, giving them a freshness and vitality.
  • This portfolio displays good technical proficiency, with some pieces more resolved than others.
  • The two works that employ actual texture (the sleeping dog and the three blue heads) have a surface richness that the other three works lack; moreover, these two works weave form and content together in a sensitive and evocative way.
  • While there is evidence of the influence of other artists, the student's voice is apparent in the work.
  • Overall, the work shows an evolving sense of sophistication.
