Student Commentary:
What is the central idea of your concentration?
The central point of interest and exploration in my concentration is the idea that language can be utilized metaphorically to convey visual images, whether literally or figuratively. Connected webs of words can allude to descriptive images that more fully establish the emotion that is addressed.
How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific slides as examples.
I am constantly perplexed and astonished at the surrounding world and aim to analyze and figure out as much of it as I possibly can. I’m not necessarily trying to reach any specific point in my life, but rather just trying to attach distinct feelings to individual fragments of diminishing time. I am investigating the idea that everything is connected in some way or another to everything else. I have been writing concise paragraphs in which one metaphor is introduced and then develops gradually into a web of more in depth, connected figurative language. These paragraphs are then correlated to my artwork to portray my splattered thoughts that consistently circle inside my head. For instance, work number 3 depicts my image of, “A lie is like a thick layer of ice that begins to form and then grows rapidly, but can be melted away with the heat of the honest truth …” Also, work number 5 exemplifies my visual imagery of, “Through this galaxy beneath my face, a tragic kingdom of desperation and empty space, my burning core emits sparks flying with infinite grace, translating into a meteor shower of thoughts that race …” This is indicative that the colors in this distorted self-portrait represent this emotional imagery described above. In work number 12 I have portrayed, “We form routines that fill up our days and provide stability, rather than spontaneity, similar to orbits that spiral around in our unique, ever expanding, universe of mind.” I just wish to maintain a clear head throughout my life, left uncluttered with meaningless, humdrum thoughts that infest and decay the lives of so many people in this world. Therefore, creating art serves as a method by which I can really analyze and explore my thoughts and ideas in a way that I can be certain that they will not become muddled.
Rationale for Score:
These genuinely whimsical works are dense, with brilliant, highly saturated color and purposeful distortions. Using standard portraiture as the subject, this student has taken the theme well beyond the mundane. The original risk-taking, in distortion of proportion and heightened color, masterfully surpasses focus on technical concerns. Overall this visually compelling work is of high quality.
