Quality Sample 1: Alexandria Gaffney, Lois Cowles Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, Lakeland, FL
Score: 6

Rationale for Score:
These works express abstract compositions juxtaposing organic forms with ruled lines. The composition, concept, and execution of each piece reflect an excellent understanding of drawing issues. The student’s use of subtle, asymmetric manipulation of the centrally focused compositions is evidence of inventive and imaginative decision-making. The works are original in concept and masterful in execution, addressing sophisticated visual and conceptual ideas. The use of elements and principles of design to demonstrate drawing skills is excellent. The work is highly engaging and evocative and embodies an original personal vision. Mark-making and surface manipulation are excellent.

Quality Sample 2: Laura Becerra, Jefferson High School, Rockford, IL
Score: 5

Rationale for Score:
This student’s work is fully engaged with the picture plane to create strong and purposeful compositions. Colored pencil and ink line are applied with confidence in most works. Visual thinking is made clear by the student’s experimentation with compositional arrangements, manipulation of ideas, and discernable voice. The drawing is generally strong, though the rendering of form is inconsistent and sometimes uninformed. Quality is good overall.

Quality Sample 3: Nicole Smith, Coral Springs High School, Coral Springs, FL
Score: 4

Rationale for Score:
This portfolio reflects good quality. Overall it shows a good understanding of composition, concepts, and execution, although some works are not fully resolved. Technical skills with the media are evident. The student is challenged by proportion and perspective issues. Elements and principles of design are used to demonstrate good drawing skills.

Quality Sample 4: Jonathan Winters, Saint Bonaventure High School, Ventura, CA
Score: 3

Rationale for Score:
The student attempts to address drawing concerns with moderate success. Although the student exhibits effort, there is not a clear understanding of the elements and principles of design to achieve success with drawing skills. The ideas may have been more challenging than the student could articulate, or could not be fully resolved because of limited technical skill. The technical aspects also resulted in apparent inconsistencies in composition, concepts, and execution. The student’s use of photographic sources serves merely as a device to copy and allowed only minimal “voice.” Overall the portfolio is of moderate quality.
