| | Section I
The student works displayed on this page are reproductions of actual works submitted by students in June 2008.
All of the samples here were chosen because they clearly represent different points on the scoring scale for Section I, Quality. In the course of the AP evaluation, each section of the portfolio is scored on a six-point scale. Once the evaluation is complete, the various scores assigned to each student's portfolio are combined and transformed into the final AP grade of 1-5. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is five pieces.
Each group of works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Quality Sample 1: Annie Vo, Hastings High School, Houston, TX
Score: 6

Rationale for Score:
These works show a confident use of materials and thoughtful attention to form in space. The student demonstrates a keen awareness of the expressive qualities of materials, whether used in combination or alone. Decisions concerning surface treatment and the juxtaposition of materials have been handled with great sensitivity. Objects 4 and 5 demonstrate creative treatment of the vessel, and the student seems equally confident addressing the figure (object 1) and abstraction (object 3). In each piece form and content work together to effectively communicate a visual idea.

Quality Sample 2: Jessica Boyd, Little Rock Central High School, Little Rock, AR
Score: 5
Rationale for Score:
In these works the student uses easily accessible materials to achieve complex visual relationships. A strong grasp of design principles is evident, and the works demonstrate successful engagement with three-dimensional space. The wearable piece (object 4) represents an inventive, adventurous approach to sculptural issues. Overall, the works reflect confidence in handling both ideas and materials.

Quality Sample 3: Patricia To, Lowell High School, San Francisco, CA
Score: 4
Rationale for Score:
These works show a sense of purpose and ambition, although not all pieces are fully resolved. Object 3 demonstrates an interesting exploratory use of materials. Objects 4 and 5 show some engagement of form with three-dimensional space, but the interaction of positive and negative space is not fully exploited. Some manipulation of ideas is evident, particularly in objects 1, 2, and 3.

Quality Sample 4: Schuyler McAllister, Little Rock Central High School, Little Rock, AR
Score: 3
Rationale for Score:
While they achieve moderate success overall, these works show some ambition in terms of engagement of space and use of materials. The juxtaposition of found materials is provocative, but the formal relationships within the works are a bit awkward or not completely resolved. There appears to be an emerging awareness of principles of three-dimensional design, perhaps best demonstrated in the paper piece (object 2).
