Student Commentary:
What is the central idea of your concentration?
The basis of my concentration is derived from an interest in mathematics and, more specifically, fractals. My images were made by using software that created visual representations of my mathematical computations. My computations were based on putting variables through multiple equations many times to create a set of points to plot in order to create fractal flames. Simply put, I created the forms and compositions mathematically.
How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific slides as examples.
What I find most interesting about this method is that I approached it from the phil[o]sophical and the metaphysical and ended up at the aesthetic, which is opposite the usual process. I knew the idea that I wanted to express, and I just had to create the visual representation of that idea. In other words, the idea, through the equations, begot the art, instead of the [other] way around.
Rationale for Score:
This concentration is a confident exploration of an original vision of mathematical computations through visual representation. Rhythm and movement are eloquently interpreted through the nonrepresentational images. The design elements of color and space coexist to unify the picture plane with an evocative impact. The student utilizes points of view within the concentration to engage the viewer with the work and the idea. Overall, the works exhibit superb craftsmanship and excellent quality.
