Rationale for Score:
Although the student chose the medium of photography exclusively for this section of the portfolio, she explores a broad range of compositional possibilities. The section demonstrates a serious exploration of various approaches to design and application of design principles. The works exhibit subtle tonal values as well as high contrast. The photographs range from highly representational to strongly abstract compositions. Light and shadow are used evocatively to convey form and subtle value progressions. When the student uses color in the digital work, it seems embedded as part of the composition of the photograph. Students can successfully employ many media and approaches when completing the breadth portion of the portfolio. This particular example demonstrates how the requirements for breadth can also be fulfilled within the constraints of one medium.
