Exams: 2002 Studio Art 2-D Design: Quality Samples

2-D Design: Quality -- Section I

The student works displayed on this page are examples of actual works submitted by students in June 2002. Beginning with the 2002 exams, the Studio Art courses were reorganized from two courses, Studio Art: General and Studio Art: Drawing, to three courses -- Studio Art: Drawing, Studio Art: 2-D Design, and Studio Art: 3-D Design.

All of the samples here were chosen because they clearly represent different points on the scoring scale for Section I, Quality. In the course of the AP evaluation, each section of the portfolio is scored on a six-point scale. Once the evaluation is complete, the various scores assigned to each student's portfolio are combined and transformed into the final AP grade of 1-5. The requirement for Section I of all three Studio Art portfolios is five pieces.

Each group of five works is accompanied by a brief rationale for the scores awarded to the works. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the students who have agreed to share their works in this way.

Portfolio 1: Tom Bongiorno, Northport High School, Northport, New York
Score: 6
This digital portfolio is inventive and demonstrates a confident knowledge of the process, allowing for painterly use of the technical media. Composition, texture, and ideas are exploited in a complex, expressive personal vision. The work is visually rich, sophisticated, and consistently of high quality.

Score: 5
The technical proficiency of this photography portfolio is strong. The technical proficiency is strong. In most works, the principles and elements of design are used to express the visual ideas of the student in an assured way. The compositions are confident and decisive with unusual viewpoints that are enhanced by the use of darks and lights.



Portfolio 3: Heather L. Wilson, Orem High School, Orem, Utah
Score: 4
In this portfolio, there is a sense of understanding and purposeful engagement with the principles and elements of design. Some works are more adventurous than others, but overall the work is not completely resolved. A sense of technical competence with the materials is evident.

The work in this portfolio shows a real sense of effort, but resolution within the design issues is incomplete. The work shows a real sense of effort, but resolution within the design issues is incomplete. The understanding of color theory and organization of compositional elements appears limited. The elements and principles of design are emerging. Both the technical aspects and the organization of these compositions appear moderate in success.
