Student Commentary:
What was your initial idea?

For my concentration I chose to create pieces that portray a variety of forms within forms. I wanted to stay with natural materials, such as reed and wood, so that I could show space within.

How did your idea grow and develop as you worked? You may refer to specific slides as examples.
To create a transparency of space in the open forms I used repetition of pattern both within the inside forms as well as the outside. The spacing in my pieces helps the design’s textures stand out in a more organized fashion and creates great views from all angles, for example (slides 1–4). As my concentration progressed I used color, found objects and different types of balance to create unusual divisions of the spaces created in the open forms.

Rationale for Score:
  • The tensions implied by the containment of forms suggest movement as well as a sense of complex rhythms.
  • The student’s concern for providing various angles from which the object can be seen is an important consideration that enhances the divergent points of view.
  • In one sculpture the integration of a clock face and its inner mechanisms is an inventive, whimsical approach indicative of risk-taking and experimentation.

* Important Note:
The numbers of the slides run from top left to bottom right.
