Student Commentary:
What was your initial idea?
My initial idea was to photograph rusted metal up close to capture the beauty I see in well-worn, usually overlooked objects. I find my art when I am wandering through cities, lurking behind dumpsters and in filthy, forgotten corners. Years of weathering can reveal old coats of paint and the oxidizing process can reveal amazing, unexpected rainbows of color. Drips and scratches that occur from hard use can create patterns and landscapes.

How did your idea grow and develop as you worked? You may refer to specific slides as examples.
The idea that these objects become more beautiful over time fascinates me. With time I developed extensive collections of photographs in every color, demonstrating a plethora of textures. I became a little bit jaded and attracted to anything distinguishing or peculiar involving rust such as screws, bolts, or bullet holes. I also drew further away from extreme close-ups and tried to incorporate the surroundings of certain rusted objects. With these scenes, as well as with my close-ups of rust, I am trying to show viewers the aesthetic appeal of places they would usually pass by and reawaken a sense of wonder in our modern environment. I am interested in how weather and time affect how things appear.

Rationale for Score:

  • The principles of design are confidently articulated and expressed through surfaces.
  • The strong awareness of shape, color, and line is used to create purposeful design.
  • A clear sense of challenge is evidenced.
  • This work demonstrates cohesiveness and growth over time.
  • The medium is used in the service of an original vision.

The student has extracted beauty from the mundane.
