Student Commentary:
What is the central idea of your concentration?
The central idea of my concentration is to create a series of abstract sculptures using a functional object that is then recreated to show an increased emphasis on negative space and curvilinear movement.

How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. When referencing specific images, please indicate the image numbers.
In the concentration, the pieces begin with more of a focus on geometric shapes and positive space. Images 1 and 2 are very much structured and show the use of straighter lines. As the concentration advances, more and more material is taken away and negative space becomes emphasized along with the curved form. Images 5 and 6 express this with a strong attention to arches as well as circles, and a heightened level of passing light. At the end, the pieces become totally circular in form and movement with undulating shapes and negative space becomes the focal point as seen in images 7 and 8.

Rationale for Score:

  • The inventive transformation of a simple, common medium into complex form is evocative and original.
  • There is an excellent consideration of balance, positive and negative space, and unity/variety throughout the body of work.
  • There is technical excellence and increased investigation of occupied and unoccupied space throughout this concentration.
  • This work reaches an excellent quality level.
