In geography, the term "core" refers to regions with concentrations of employment, capital, and economic control. However, the growth of industrial cores cannot be understood without examining the links between the core and peripheral places.

Colonialism was instrumental in creating the international division of labor. Colonies with particular comparative advantages specialized in the production of raw materials and foods, provided they did not compete with the interests of the core nations.
