Writing: Composition

Overview
This task tests the ability to write a formal composition. It comprises a single prompt, which identifies a topic, details aspects of the topic to address, and specifies that the response should be justified with two specific examples. The student is allotted 30 minutes to write a composition of about 150 words. The response receives a single holistic score based on the criteria outlined in the task directions.

Results
In reviewing the student responses for this task, the Development Committee found that the English directions were worded clearly, as students completed the exercise as expected. The responses to the task represented a wide range of performance. Committee members found that some responses were unfocused or did not completely address the prompt. Using this information, the committee modified the formatting of the actual exam question to emphasize the importance of using supporting examples in the composition.
