AP Italian Language and Culture Free-Response Question Tryout
| | In the spring of 2005, the Advanced Placement Program conducted a tryout of free-response tasks to be included in the new AP Italian Language and Culture Exam. The tasks used in the tryout are all the writing and speaking questions that appear in the AP Italian Language and Culture Course Description (pages 17-25).

Approximately 70 students in advanced Italian classes at three high schools and fourth-semester Italian classes at one university participated in the tryout. Since not all classes had time to administer all of the tasks, the questions were divided into four modules -- Writing: Paragraph Completion (Verbs) and Paragraph Completion (Non-verbs); Writing: Composition; Culture: Composition; Speaking: Picture Sequence Story Narration and Directed Response Conversation. Consequently, not every student responded to every task in this tryout. Each student response received a sample letter identifier, assigned independently for each module. The same sample letter identifier in different tasks does not necessarily correspond to the same student. For instance, Writing: Paragraph Completion (Non-verbs), Sample S is not necessarily the same student as Writing: Composition, Sample S.
The AP Italian Development Committee reviewed student responses as part of the process of evaluating the exam directions, developing the questions for the first exams, and refining the scoring guidelines to be used to rate exam responses. For purposes of this tryout, committee members ranked responses as high, medium, or low.
