Paragraph Completion (Verbs)

Overview
This task tests the ability to identify and write appropriate verb forms. It comprises a passage, which provides a specific context, containing 10 blanks; for each blank, there is a verb infinitive. The student is allotted five minutes total to write the appropriate form of each verb. It is important to read carefully the entire passage and use the context information provided to determine the appropriate verb form. The response for each of the 10 blanks is scored individually but must be completely correct to receive credit; all 10 scores count equally in calculating the total score. This particular passage requires present perfect, imperfect, imperfect subjunctive, present, formal command, infinitive, and present subjunctive forms.

Results
In reviewing the student responses for this task, the Development Committee found that the English directions were worded clearly, as students completed the exercise as expected. The responses to the task represented a wide range of performance. Committee members found that some students interpreted parts of the passage in unanticipated ways, leading to unexpected responses that would nevertheless be marked as correct in actual exam scoring. Using this information, the committee reviewed actual exam passages and introduced additional context where necessary to limit the possible acceptable responses.
