| | Identity Game with Writing and Speaking This activity is called "Steckbrief" because you have to provide information about yourself but not reveal your true identity until the end. Each student fills out the form, completing each sentence with personal information. Then everybody tapes their Steckbriefe to the blackboard. After the blackboard is covered with Steckbriefe, the students look them over and each select one, as long as it isn't their own. Then they go around the room until they find the person whose Steckbrief they've selected. At that point they ask their person at least two questions and note the answers.
Once everybody has found their Gesteckbriefte, one person -- usually the teacher, who also participates -- introduces that person to the class using the information on the Steckbrief. Sometimes the introductions "chain" -- that is, the first person introduces a second person, who introduces a third person, who introduces a fourth person, and so on. Sometimes the introductions "dead-end," when one person introduces a person, who in turn introduces the first person, in which case the teacher calls for a volunteer from the rest of the group to continue the introductions. Once every student has introduced somebody else, the students write up as a homework assignment a brief biography based on the information available. Students are at liberty to make up things if there are gaps in the information.
The example here is from a fifth-semester, college-level composition course, but the Steckbrief activity can be adapted for any level. It's best for students who have had the equivalent of one semester of college German so they can complete simple sentences such as "Ich komme aus...", "Ich bin... Jahre alt", "Ich wohne in...","Ich möchte gern...", and so forth, but once they have practiced completing any set of sentences, they will be ready for this activity.
