Computer Science A & AB: Introduction of Java in 2003-2004

In October 2000, the AP Computer Science Development Committee made a formal request to the College Board that the AP Computer Science curriculum be revised to include object orientation and to use Java as the delivery language for the AP Computer Science Examinations, beginning with the 2003 academic year. The request was approved by the College Board in November 2000.

The report "Recommendations of the AP Computer Science Ad Hoc Committee" (see below) contains a summary of the rationale for updating the AP Computer Science curriculum and results of surveys that support the recommendation. It also contains a time line that outlines the development of materials and workshops suggested for teacher professional development. These materials and workshops will help to ensure that the transition to the revised curriculum will progress as smoothly as possible.

A subset of Java has been approved for use in the AP Computer Science Examinations.
