AP CS Exam: The Final Preparation

Read more Strategies...

As the AP Exam date nears, everyone becomes a bit nervous. Did we cover all of the topics? Do the students really understand the concepts? What can we do now, when the exam is less than one month away? How can we minimize the stress level of the students?

One Teacher's Suggestion
Contributed Anonymously

About two weeks before the AP Exam, I give each student a copy of the current AP CS Topic Outline and a copy of the appropriate AP Java Subset. The students are told to go through each of the documents very carefully. They are told to highlight anything in the documents that is not crystal clear.
Topic Outline for AP CS: 2004-2005
Computer Science AB: The AP Java Subset

About one week before the exam, I review both documents with the class in detail (in the hope of clearing the not-so-clear topics). I point out:
  • Things to be sure to remember
  • Common pitfalls and errors made
I distribute copies of the documents that the students will receive for use during the exam:
  • Appropriate appendices of the case study
  • Appropriate Quick Reference Guide
We review these documents in detail.

I find that by doing this, most students gain a sense of self confidence. They realize that they understand the topics that will be tested on and their anxiety decreases!
