Required Reading List Criteria:
In preparing the required reading list, the Development Committee applied the following set of criteria:
- The list should acquaint students with works representative of different historical periods, different literary movements and genres, different geographic areas, female and male authors, and diverse population groups within the Spanish-speaking world.
- Works should be of historical and literary significance.
- Works should be accessible and of interest to students.
- Works should lend themselves to analysis and discussion. There should be a certain amount of thematic overlap between works.
- Works should lend themselves to the development of successful AP Exam questions.
- The list should reflect the need for the AP Spanish Literature course to correspond to curricula in colleges and universities.
The list should meet the practical needs of AP teachers: - The works themselves, as well as appropriate criticism on them, must be readily available. The works should appear in well-known and easily accessible anthologies.
- The works, like the list itself, must be of a reasonable length.
- As many as possible of the five prescribed authors on the current list will be represented on the new list. (In fact, works by four of the five appear: Jorge Luis Borges, Federico García Lorca, Gabriel García Márquez, and Miguel de Unamuno.)
2002-03 Required Reading List:
Students should read authentic editions (abridged or translated versions are not appropriate) of all the works on this list, except where choice is indicated. Works from the list are specifically asked about on the AP Spanish Literature Exam.
Here is a list organized by period and author, but of course the works need not be presented in this particular order. The list lends itself to curricula structured to highlight theme, genre, and other qualities of the works.
There is a vast listing of related Web sites under "See also." The links provided are to digital libraries, where many of the works are available online, as text and/or audio -- some even recited by the author. More may become available in the future. Unfortunately, some works previously available online (listed and linked to below) have been withdrawn by their publishers. We hope that these removals are the result of temporary, technical issues and that the works will be reposted. Meanwhile, we'll seek out other electronic sources for all the texts on this reading list. For starters, we have received permission to add "Mi caballo mago" by Sabine R. Ulibarrí; please see the link under Ulibarrí for the full text of this article.
