III. Categorization and Synthesizing Strategies for Unit Review

by Cora Greer
University of Maine at Machias
Machias, Maine

The average student, when given free rein, will probably resort to rote memorization of persons and events. While memorization may get students through a particular exam, the knowledge is soon forgotten and it doesn't enhance their understanding of why an event or individual is significant. The following categorization and synthesizing handouts, using the "big picture" statement as their starting point, force students to think about the information. Both of these exercises are suited to group work.
