| | Narration
This is an edited version of an essay by Martha Sharma, Cathedral School, Washington, D.C. For the complete article see the Journal of Geography, May-August 2000, Vol. 99, No. 3/4.
Not only do different levels of density impact the quality of human life and social organizations, patterns are also important. The easiest way to discuss this with students is to compare different travel costs (time, money, and impact on environment) for movement among people living along a road and 100 miles apart vs. a people living along a road living one mile apart. Compact and dispersed settlements will also be discussed in other sections of the course.
