OAH-AP Collaboration: America on the World Stage

The April 2004 issue of the OAH Magazine of History marks the launching of an exciting new essay series, "America on the World Stage," conceived and overseen by the OAH-Advanced Placement Joint Advisory Board on Teaching the U.S. History Survey. Aimed at helping secondary and college-level instructors in the design and substance of the United States history course, essays in this series will take up the challenge posed by the OAH's LaPietra Report (2000): that it is time for "rethinking American History in a global age." Internationalizing the teaching of U.S. history, the authors of the report argue, will help students "better understand the emergence of the United States in the world and the significance of its power and presence." The survey course seems to be the best place to begin such a reframing.

More than a dozen essays are planned. All will appear in the OAH Magazine of History and on AP Central over the next two years. They will treat significant topics and events in United States history, emphasizing both the importance and distinctiveness of the American national experience in the context of world history. Treatment of subjects and themes will be both comparative and "interactive" (i.e., showing how American events are actually interrelated with events elsewhere). Perhaps most important, topics will be presented in a way that will allow their smooth placement into the "traditional" syllabus of the survey course.

The Joint Advisory Board is pleased and proud to introduce this significant new series with David Armitage's excellent essay on "The Declaration of Independence in World Context." We are confident that readers will both enjoy it and find it useful in thinking about how to "internationalize" their teaching about this most essential American document.
