Search Engines, Lists, and Directories

Google
This omnibus Web site is universally acknowledged to be the most comprehensive search engine. Type in an artist's name and hit "Google Search" and you get a listing of dozens, thousands, and in some cases, more than a million references. Use "I'm Feeling Lucky" to get only one return on your search, usually the premier site. For example, a search for Van Gogh listed 1,140,000 listings, while the "Lucky" search gave the full text of the Van Gogh gallery, the first site listed on the Google Search.

dmoz -- Open Directory Project
This directory lists a large number of classifications and links. Clicking on Education will provide you with thousands of entries. Narrowing it down will reveal more layers. An example: Choose Education and look for Eyes on Art, a tutorial on looking at and analyzing art, and most importantly, critiquing and talking/writing about art. Each section of this lesson plan (from California) offers shortcuts or a chance to delve into a subject. Students compare works using examples from the National Gallery of Art. They can also look at various eras of art history. In addition, there is a quiz, referenced to standards. This site is worth a look, but you'll have to be selective. Clicking on the Drawing link offers a large number of entries, but some are rather prescriptive and some are worthless. But don't get discouraged; there are some real gems here.

ArtLex Art Dictionary
This site is definitive, easy-to-use, and full of examples. The navigation bar/alphabet is a list of letters sets. Click on "In-Iz" and find "incongruity," with a definition and examples of artwork by Dali, Magritte, and Scott Mutter, a contemporary photographer. This is a treasure of a site; even if you argue with a definition, you have a place to start the discussion.

IMAGESITE
This is a huge directory of sites for artists, valuable because of its professional references; it contains artists' agents, organizations relating to every kind of art production, and much more.
