Biology: How the Topic Outline Is Composed

Excerpts from the AP Biology Teachers' Discussion Group

Tip: "ETS does a survey of college courses every few years, and that is why the AP course outline changes from time to time. It follows the responses to those surveys."
-- Jean DeSaix, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. 2/16/00

Tip: "Surveys are sent out to over 500 colleges and universities. As with all surveys, some respond and some don't. Among those that do, you get a great deal of conflicting information. The test development committee spends hours pouring over those surveys and tries to create an outline and subsequent test that does just what you suggest, represent the content being presented in college courses.

I will say that the AP Biology Exam is far more forgiving that the AP Chemistry Exam. Students also do not need to know everything to do quite well on the exam. I continually remind my students of that! It eases their fears and helps them feel that the mounds of information before them can be conquered!

Also, since you teach in Texas, you can award students a credit and a half for AP Biology. That's an extra semester for you -- it's listed in the TEKS for Texas. It's a great deal of help for you and your students."
-- Rene McCormick, Carroll High School, Southlake, Texas. 2/16/00
