AP Calculus for a New Century

by Dan Kennedy
Baylor School
Chattanooga, Tennessee

Introduction
Critics of calculus courses (and of mathematics courses in general) have never been hard to find in the general population, collegiate or otherwise. Their comments rolled off the backs of most mathematicians precisely because they assumed these critics to be uninformed about mathematics -- a regrettably verifiable situation for which nobody seemed willing to assume blame. This began to change about 15 years ago, when mathematicians themselves started to question (with unexpected vigor) what they were teaching to whom and how and why they were teaching it. These were the beginnings of the educational reform movements we recognize today as the MAA/NRC/NSF-driven "calculus reform" movement on the college level and the NCTM-driven "standards" movement on the pre-college level.
