Literary Movements

Understanding Context

Students need to familiarize themselves with literary movements in order to understand the works in their proper historical and cultural context. The resources available in Spanish are outstanding. They are organized in three categories: general sites on literary history that include information on Spain as well as Spanish America; sites on the history of Spanish literature; and sites on Latin American literary history.

General (Spain and Spanish America)
  • Biblioteca Virtual Cervantes
This site is the grandfather of Spanish literary Web sites. Whatever you're looking for is buried somewhere in this huge database. The trick may be finding it! In the section "Biblioteca del autor" you will find a well-organized outline of links to the life and works of the author, his or her works online, critical material, and much more. There is even a "Biblioteca de voces" where the works may be accessed aurally, and your students may be able to hear Neruda and Guillén, for instance, reciting their own poetry. If you could have only one single site, this would have to be it!

  • El aleph
This site bills itself as a "buscador literario." It is an outstanding source for links to literary matters.

  • Iberian Language and Literature Web
Yale University's site, which links to resources dealing with Hispanic language and literature, is important but can be overwhelming because of the vast amount of information the site contains.
