Analyzing Literary Texts

Your students will need to learn how to analyze literary texts and even familiarize themselves with some literary theory.
  • Comentario de Textos Literarios
José Segura's site includes a model for the "Comentarario de texto" of a poem, which is a thorough analysis of its formal features. In the process he provides an amazing and thorough introduction to Spanish prosody and rhetorical terms. This site is a "must" for the teaching and analysis of poetry!

  • Guía didáctica para interpretar y comentar los textos literarios
Santillana Publishers has a guide for analyzing poems, novels, and plays that is quite useful.

  • El Comentario de texto
Cenlit Web also uses the "comentario" technique and applies it to a romance, but on a much less ambitious scale than Segura.
    El Comentario de texto

  • Comentario de textos literarios
This site provides explications of two prose works on the AP list: the selections from Juan Manuel and Larra.

  • Introducción a la Literatura
This site has a good, no nonsense introduction in Spanish to the study of literary texts and the individual genres. It appears in the form of a monograph, so don't be disappointed by its lack of design.
    Introducción a la Literatura
Literary texts can be interpreted from a number of critical perspectives, each with its own theoretical foundations. For instance, reception theory is concerned with the way works were received by their intended audience, while semiotics studies signs and codes, their interaction in the work and how these are affected by their cultural, social, or historical context. It's a good idea to be familiar with a number of critical approaches, for different works require different critical apparatuses to uncover their meaning.
  • Modern Literary Theory
Professor Kristi Siegel describes in simple language the various contemporary schools of literary theory.
