A Compendium of Data on Global Change
For those that like to do data analysis, this is the site for you. Atmospheric Trace Gas Concentrations, which includes ice core CO2 data from Vostok, Antarctica, goes back almost 420,000 years. You can get the raw data or just see it graphically. I have used graphs of this data in class lecture materials and handouts. The Greenhouse Gas Emissions section can be described globally, by regions, or by specific countries. There is even data based on the Kyoto Accords. In class, I have used TI-Interactive to download and graph the data of CO2 emissions caused by the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas from 1785 to 1998 and looked at the per capita emissions as well. The Climate section is also rich with data. I have used the historic ice core temperature records, also from Vostok, to compare with the CO2 data from the same source to see evidence of global warming. The correlation is amazing. There are a wide variety of project assignments possible at this site.

Making Schoenbein Paper to Measure Tropospheric Ozone
This is a fun activity for the spring when many of us cover this topic. The students prepare a few pieces of filter paper, as outlined in the directions, and then cut them into strips and place them around the school building, campus, and neighborhood. They map the positions of their test strips and when finished the classes accumulate their information into one large data set. Then we try to draw conclusions about tropospheric levels of ozone in our locality. This exercise was designed for middle school students, but it can be easily adapted and expanded to the AP level. It comes complete with learning goals and alignments to National Science Education Standards and AAAS's Benchmarks for Science Literacy, Project 2061.
