This site, which offers a tutorial narrative on the political career of Mohammad Ali of Egypt, is composed of selections from various scholarly works interspersed with thought provoking questions. After Napoleon's sojourn in Egypt, its Ottoman governor, Mohammad Ali attempted to "make Egypt another France." It remains unclear whether he intended it to be the France of 1789, that of the restored monarchy, or that that of the French Empire. Ali's break with Ottoman precedent and his experiment with Westernization marked a major watershed in world history.
